Nottscops Teaching the Kids
“Teach ’em while they’re young!” It has always been recognised that making early contact with children will help them to form a respectful attitude to not just the police, but for the law and society. I can certainly remember my days at primary school when a policeman would come in and talk to us all, usually about road safety. Nottscops have always had active school liaison programmes, pioneered mainly by the City Police, which continue to the present day. I also remember doing police-run cycling proficiency course at school where the local policeman put cones around the playground for us to manoeuvre around whilst giving hand-signals. Imagine the big proud grin on our faces when we were presented with our Cycling Proficiency pennants by the big policeman to put on our bikes! I remember the threat being made that if we were ever caught cycling on the pavement or “two-up” we would have the award taken from us at a visit to the police station with our parents. Respect!
