Pc Paul Squires's first summer on the job as a probationer at the old Canal Street Police Station.

" I was on duty at the Nottingham Water Festival held on Victoria Embankment. The little chap in the picture went for an un-planned dip in the Trent and I ended up fishing him out. Not surprisingly he was a touch damp and chilly so I put my tunic around him and went off to try and find his parents. I heard a camera "click" at one point but didn't think too much of it. So imagine my utter surprise when a few days later I was walking my beat along Manvers Street when on passing a newsagents window I ended up stopped in my tracks on seeing I had made the front page of the Nottingham Voice!!!!!!!!  I well recall showing it in the Sergeants office at Canal Street and one of the Sergeants proudly informing me that if my Chief Superintendent,(P.P.Smith) gets to see or hear of it I would be "history". I certainly avoided him for quite sometime. I doubt he did see it because I'm fairly sure I would have heard about it.  "
