The Old Mansfield Police Station

Mansfield Police Station on Station Street, Mansfield closed its doors at the end of March 1999. The cells were locked for the last time at 2200hrs 31st March that year by Sgt Chris Akers shortly after bailing the final prisoner to appear at the Magistrates Court. The officer dealing with the last prisoner was PC 2251 'Roz' Manson. Over the years the old Police Station had become too small to cope with modern day policing and a new one was built on Great Central Road in Mansfield. The operational date for the new station was 2nd April 1999, cleverly avoiding the date of 1st April for some unexplained reason! The old station was very quickly demolished and its site now hosts a modern shopping outlet. There is no trace whatsoever of the police station that once stood there.

The last few days of Mansfield Poloce station are remembered here by Chris Akers

"The picture shows a few of us working at Mansfield shortly before closure. Although I was working at Forest Town I was drafted in on some days to act as Custody Officer. This was one such day. The photo is taken outside the front door and as can be seen many feet have passed over the steps judging by the wear on the stone steps. Also it was a nice area to greet people as the station was no smoking and all the smoking was done outside (nub ends everywhere!!!)

The same happy band of people outside the station on Commercial Street. It is interesting to note that the facade of this building (the wall behind us if you are not sure) was re-constructed on a building further down Station Street. It is visible from Quaker Way/Station Street junction. I believe that this part of the building was listed hence its rebuild. The windows behind us were replaced in the early 90s from good old fashioned sash windows to plastic draught free ones. Once again - progress!! Or am I being old fashioned ??? "
