The Ghost of Epperstone Manor

Since the original publication of Nottscops I have received at least two accounts of evidence suggesting that Epperstone Manor is haunted. One of these ghostly tales comes from Andy Padmore

"I was attached to the force training school from June 1978 to July 1980. Every few weeks an instructor was detailed to work a 4pm - 12midnight shift which was in order to have a 'duty officer' available to deal with out of hours matters involving the students and the training school grounds and
buildings. The duty officer would have the keys to the manor and he/she would have to make sure that the bar was vacated, the building cleared, the burglar alarm set and all doors and windows locked. This meant that you were the last one to leave.

One night just before midnight I had done my usual round of the rooms and closed all doors and windows and switched off all the lights and was about to set the alarm. As I approached the door leading to the drive down to the main gate I heard noises from upstairs somewhere above the bar area. The noises sounded like someone walking about. I had checked all rooms and closed all doors so I knew no
one was in the building. I of course had to re-check everything again. Armed only with the large torch that we were handed along with the bunch of keys I went upstairs and commenced to re-visit all the rooms in the old manor.

The noises I heard appeared to come from the old water tower which was at that end of the building and was used for storage of old files and documents that went back donkeys years. All the rooms were still secure and empty. The water tower was the last room I checked, reluctantly I might add. Going in and up the few stairs was fine and a sweep with the torch revealed nothing at all, but leaving the room was another matter. I actually walked out backwards down the few steps and closed the door firmly. I was happy that no one was in the building but I was relieved when I finally locked the main door and was driving home.

I'm not particularly prone to being spooked about this sort of thing but I am absolutely clear in my mind that I heard footsteps that night. I performed the duty officer several times after but never heard the noises again. From that time on I always checked the water tower first while all the lights were still on in the manor. "
