Mark IV Zephyrs in the County

In the 50s and 60s Ford labelled their big cars as Zephyrs and updated them at regular intervals from their relatively small Mk I to the big, ugly Mk IV which was the last update before the Zephyr name was dropped. As seen for other Nottscops photos, Nottinghamshire Constabulary used all the various versions of these cars but the Mk IV was not liked very much.

Martyn Cox recalls patrolling near RAF Fillingley and hoping that an RAF Vulcan bomber would land on the bonnet, mistaking it for a runway as the front end was incredibly long and its boot was ridiculously short. This was because the spare wheel was stored up front under the bonnet near the radiator which tended to cause overheating problems when the cars were driven hard.
