The Police Box on the Old Market Square

It's unlikely that telephone boxes would ever be listed buildings, so consequently many of the hundreds that once stood on the streets have now gone. Thankfully, the police box that stood on the Old Market Square is still around, although not in the best of health. After its uprooting from slab square it provided shelter for the squirrels at Sherwood Lodge where it stood across from the radio workshops.

Recently it dissapeared. Horror of horrors because I planned to photograph it to put on Nottscops, hopefully with any tales people could provide me with about its past history.
After some detective work, which was a first for me never having been in CID, the missing police box has been found! Thanks to some hard work with a hammer, brush and wood-screws Jeff Todd of HQ Services is painstakingly restoring the box to its former glory in readiness for resiting behind the gatehouse at the entrance to Sherwood Lodge. You may have already seen the concrete plinth lying in waiting.

I'm told that the box could tell many a story about all sorts of goings-on when it stood on Slab Square....both in and out of the box. Officially it was a contact point for Central Officers and a means for the public to get in contact with the police. Unofficially, it had other uses as well but I'm not going into that except to say that nothing untoward would ever happen in such a structure in the grounds of Sherwood Lodge.
