The Traffic Wing Triumphs
Two body versions of Triumph 2500 TC traffic cars with Pc Paul Woodward putting out the signs for yet another road accident on the Forest. Photo: Paul Woodward Nottinghamshire Constabulary, like most police forces was always committed to "Buying British", even though some foign made items might have been better and cheaper. So what could have been more Breitish than Triumph police cars? These were around in the days of British Leyland, the long defunct strike-ridden nationalised car company. The cars were good, sturdy and reliable if not very fast. And anyone who bought one felt good that they were "Backing Britain".On one particular day in the late 70s a local Volvo dealer loaned a police-specification Police Car to Nottingham Traffic Wing to trial, much to the distain of the superintendent at the wing who directed that on no account was it to be used on patrol because it was foreign. Ironically in years to come the entire Traffic Department fleet was to consist of Volvo cars. |
