The Mobile Cell Blocks

Before the days of Group 4 Court Services it was the duty of the police to take sentenced and remanded prisoners to prison from Court. The journey from prison to court was undertaken by the prison service. Nottinghamshire Police used 2 Bedford mobile cell blocks which were based at Nottingham Traffic Wing and driven by TD(N) officers and crewed by police Cell-Block staff.

In 1993 this job fell to Group 4 and the mobile blocks became redundant. One of the vehicles was destroyed in an accident on the M1 whilst travelling to Glen Parva Detention Centre, tragically killing one of the crew.
