Until "Roads Policing" came about as a result of the last force Re--organisation, the Traffic Department provided traffic policing to Nottinghamshire.
Ollerton Police Station was the home to the northern area known as TD(O) whilst the bottom
half of the county was covered by Nottingham Traffic Wing, TD(N) which was based at and old leased garage premise on Shakespeare Street in the city. TD(N) also managed the M1 motorway from the Police Post at Trowell Services as well as providing crew for the now sadly disbanded River Patrol at Meadow Lane.
Up to the mid 1970s, two small Traffic Department garages were also maintained at Mansfield and Newark before being closed and being taken over as part of the Northern Traffic Department at Ollerton.
One of the officers who were based at Newark was Mick Postles who went to Newark Traffic Department in 1974 and was there until its demise in 1978. Like all the officers at Newark TD, Mick became part of the A1 section patrolling, double crewed, the full length of the A1 but particularly down to Markham Moor. "Woe betide you if Charlie Lane found you helping out section to do their policing," says Mick who, now retired as a police officer, is now part of the Camera Safety Team. "I remember many things that Traffic Officers were required to do within the traditions of the original Traffic Department which were quickly eroded when we amalgamated to just the two sections at Nottingham and Ollerton."
Newark's Traffic Department was based in the old fire station, Portland Street and was accessed from Pelham Street. This later became a county council meeting centre.
Worksop and Retford also had their own departments at those respective Police Stations.
Prior to being based at Epperstone Manor the Force Driving School was ran from a small office at the old Newark TD Wing. In the mid seventies, due to refurbishment at Mansfield Police Station, Mansfield Traffic was housed at what is now known as Mansfield Woodhouse contact point Swan Lane, Mansfield Woodhouse.
